What is Amoxicillin?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection is an antibiotic drug used for bacterial infections in many species of animals such as cats, dogs, horses, cows, goats, pigs, and sheep. It is indicated for the treatment of skin infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, bone/joint infections, and many other types of infections.

Amoxicillin is a moderate-spectrum, beta-lactam penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, which kills the bacteria.

It is important to note that this formulation of amoxicillin is for veterinary purposes only. While AdvaCare Pharma offers many similar products that are available for human use, this particular medication should be prescribed by a veterinary doctor or animal care specialist for an animal.

AdvaCare Pharma is a producer and exporter of Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection. This medicine is produced in our GMP-certified facilities in China, India, and the USA. These facilities are routinely audited to ensure they comply with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Uses

What is Amoxicillin used for?

It's used to treat bacterial infections such as:

  • respiratory tract infections (e.g. bronchopneumonia)
  • genitourinary infections (e.g. cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis)
  • skin and soft tissue infections (e.g. mastitis, abscess, cellulitis, wound infections)
  • bone and joint infections (e.g. osteomyelitis)
  • secondary infections during a viral infection

In pigs, this medicine is prescribed for arthritis and meningitis caused by Streptococcus suis and secondary infections due to ear and tail-biting.

What animals can be treated with Amoxicillin?

This medicine is recommended for horses, companion animals, dogs and cats, and livestock animals like cows, pigs, sheep, and goats. Do not use amoxicillin to treat rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, or other small mammals, as it may cause enteritis or clostridial enterotoxemia in these animals.

How is Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection used?

This medication has been manufactured as a suspension for injection, which is intended to be administered by SC/IM/IV injection.

How long does it take for Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection to work?

The effects can usually be seen within 24 to 48 hours of the first dose, but this can vary depending on the severity and type of infection being treated. Continue the full course of treatment, even if symptoms seem to improve, to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.

Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection?

For cows and pigs, the withdrawal period is 14-28 days after treatment. For milk, the withdrawal period is 4 hours.

Can Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection interact with other medications?

Amoxicillin can interact with various types of medications. Probenecid, a medication used for gout, can elevate the levels of amoxicillin in the bloodstream by reducing its excretion, potentially leading to increased side effects. Allopurinol, another gout and kidney stone medication, can raise the risk of allergic skin reactions when used concurrently with amoxicillin.

Anticoagulants like warfarin can have their effects enhanced by amoxicillin, thereby increasing the risk of bleeding. The effectiveness of the oral typhoid vaccine can be diminished by amoxicillin. Inform the veterinarian about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal products, that your animal is currently taking before starting treatment.

Can Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection be used in pregnant or lactating animals?

Amoxicillin can be safely used in pregnant or lactating animals. However, it should only be used when the benefits outweigh the risks, as determined by a veterinarian.

Is it safe to use Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection past its expiry date?

No, expired medications should not be used. They may not be effective due to decreased potency over time, and in some cases, they could be harmful. Always check the expiration date on the bottle before administering the medication, and dispose of any expired medications properly.

How should Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 25°C.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection.

Some common side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • localized reactions and pain at the injection site
  • gastrointestinal effects (appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea)

Serious side effects may include:

  • allergic reaction (skin rash, fever, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing)
  • incoordination while walking

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a veterinarian.

Precautions

Do NOT use Amoxicillin Suspension for animals that:

  • have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or any of the ingredients.
  • have a known allergy or hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • are newly born.
  • are small herbivore mammal, such as a guinea pig or a rabbit.
  • have renal impairment.

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution in animals that:

  • are undergoing anticoagulation therapy with drugs such as methotrexate or warfarin.
  • are pregnant or lactating.

Amoxicillin may cause false-positive results on a urine glucose test because it can interfere with the test's chemical reactions. Urine glucose tests often rely on a series of reactions involving enzymes that detect glucose in the urine. However, amoxicillin and other antibiotics might interact with these enzymes or the glucose in the urine, leading to inaccurate results.

Do not use amoxicillin with fast-acting bacteriostatic agents, such as chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, or sulphonamides because these medications work by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, while amoxicillin works by killing bacteria. When used together, the bacteriostatic agents can interfere with the bactericidal action of amoxicillin, potentially making it less effective.

Monitor the animal's reaction to the medication closely. If any adverse reactions occur, such as severe diarrhea or allergic reactions, stop the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately.

What are the most common animals Amoxicillin Suspension is used for?

Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection is typically used in the following types of animals:

  • Cats: Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection is often used in cats to treat bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections and skin infections. The drug works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial cell walls.
  • Cows: In cows, this antibiotic is typically used to treat respiratory and gastrointestinal tract infections caused by bacteria. It can also be used in cases of mastitis.
  • Dogs: The drug is commonly used in dogs for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including skin infections, wounds, abscesses, and dental infections. It's also used to prevent infections after surgery.
  • Goats: In goats, Amoxicillin Suspension for Injection is often used to combat respiratory infections and mastitis. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria that commonly affect this animal.
  • Horses: This antibiotic is used in horses primarily for treating bacterial infections of the respiratory tract and skin. It can also be used for the treatment and prevention of strangles, a serious bacterial infection.
  • Pigs: In pigs, it's primarily used for the treatment of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections caused by amoxicillin-sensitive organisms.
  • Sheep: Similar to goats, in sheep, this drug is primarily used to treat respiratory infections and mastitis. It's also used to treat foot rot, a common bacterial infection in sheep.
*Regulatory compliance may vary according to production standard, import requirements and/or manufacturing origin.
