Sulfadiazine + Trimethoprim Boluses are an antibiotic/antimicrobial combination drug used to treat infections in animals like horses, goats, sheep, camels, and cows. This medicine is indicated for the treatment of certain gastrointestinal, respiratory, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
These boluses contain the active ingredients Sulfadiazine and Trimethoprim. Sulfadiazine is classified as a sulfonamide antibiotic. It displays action against most gram-positive and many gram-negative bacteria. It works by inhibiting folic acid synthesis within the bacteria. Trimethoprim is classified as an antibiotic and folate synthesis inhibitor.
The combination shows a broad range of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria like E. coli, Haemophilus, Pasteurella, Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus spp.

What is Sulfadiazine + Trimethoprim used for?
It's used to treat infections such as:
- acute strangles;
- respiratory infections;
- equine protozoal myeloencephalitis;
- acute urogenital infections;

It is also used for the treatment or prevention of post-parturient infections, including vaginitis and metritis.

The withdrawal time is 15 days for meat.
Dosage
How much Sulfadiazine + Trimethoprim should be given to livestock?
The usual dose is 1 bolus per 40kg of body weight. The treatment should continue until two days after the symptoms have resolved.
This medicine may be administered by hand, balling gun, or a dosing bottle.

Side Effects

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution for an animal that is dehydrated.
There are known interactions between these medications and drugs such as amantadine, antacids, cyclosporine, digoxin, thiazide diuretics, warfarin, methotrexate, phenytoin, tricyclic antidepressants, pyrimethamine, potassium supplements, and potassium-sparing agents.
Wear protective gloves while handling these boluses. This product should not be handled by those sensitive to sulfonamides.
