What is Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder?
Active Ingredients: Sulfaclozine
Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder is an antibiotic drug used for the treatment and control of various types of infectious diseases in poultry. It is indicated for the treatment of colibacteriosis, coccidiosis (due to Eimeria), Salmonellosis, and Pasteurellosis (fowl cholera).
Sulfaclozine is a sulfonamide derivative, which shows both antibacterial and anticoccidial properties. It works by inhibiting the conversion of PABA to folic acid.
This group of antibiotics is among the oldest and most widely in veterinary medicine use. It is mostly used because of its low price and efficacy. Most of the sulfonamides are administered 1-4 times per day, but the frequency of this drug will depend on the veterinarian's choice and the type of infection. In some cases, the administration is less frequent depending on the elimination process in certain animal species. This drug is a derivative of sulfanilamide, the main nucleus of all sulfonamides in this group. This group of antibiotics is amphoteric, which has a role as weak organic acids. This makes them more soluble in alkaline aqueous solutions than in acidic solutions. The pH of sulfonamides is between 4.8 and 8.6.
Sulfaclozine is a structural analog of PABA, which inhibits the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase (DPS). This prevents the synthesis of folic acid from PABA. This leads to the blockade of several enzymes which are necessary for RNA formation. The effect of the antibiotic is bacteriostatic, but it can have a bactericidal action when given in high concentrations in urine.
To achieve the best effects with this antibiotic, it should be given in the early stages of acute infections when pathogens are rapidly multiplying. This antibiotic does not affect quiescent bacteria. The effects are not seen immediately because there is a latent period due to the pathogen’s existing storage of folic acids. When the stores of folic acid are spent, the antibiotic begins to function, and bacteriostasis occurs. If the PABA increases, bacterial growth can resume. The antibiotic must be dosed adequately in order for the enzyme inhibitory effect to continue.
This antibiotic is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Nocardia, Actinomyces spp), as well as some protozoal infections. It is also effective in treating various species, including Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Corynebacterium, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Proteus, Clostridium, and Leptospira.
It is important to note that Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder is for veterinary purposes only.

Uses
What is Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder used for?
It's used to treat infections such as:
- coccidiosis
- colibacteriosis
- salmonellosis
- pasteurellosis
What animals can be treated with Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder?
This medicine is recommended for poultry.
How is Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder used?
This medicine has been manufactured as a water-soluble powder, which is intended to be mixed in drinking water and administered orally.
How does Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder help animals?
When administered orally, this antibiotic is rapidly and completely absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract of the animals. In ruminants, the absorption is delayed due to ruminal stasis. In these cases, the drug undergoes microbial degradation for around 2-4 hours. In cases of acute life-threatening infections, other forms of this drug should be chosen in order to administer it intravenously. It can be even administered to improve feed efficiency. The peak concentrations of this drug occur in approximately 4 hours.
This drug is distributed via the extracellular fluid and depends on the ionization state of the sulfonamides, tissue vascularity, and the presence of specific barriers. It is bound to plasma proteins, and the concentration of the drug is the highest in the kidneys. Low concentrations are present in the adipose tissue. Passive diffusion occurs in milk, and the concentrations are inadequate to treat infections.
The drug is extensively metabolized and the drug is primarily excreted through urine. The drug can also be excreted through bile, feces, milk, tears, and sweat. The excretion is through glomerular filtration, active tubular secretion, and tubular reabsorption.
What are the therapeutic properties of Sulfaclozine?
This antibiotic can help in treating or preventing acute systemic or local infections. It can help in treating the respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in animals.
The antibiotic should be administered as soon as possible to achieve a full recovery. Chronic infections are not responsive to sulfaclozine treatment. The veterinarian should first diagnose the disease and then choose appropriate treatment procedures.
How can Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder help in the treatment of Coccidiosis?
Sulfaclozine has antibacterial and anticoccidial effects. It shows good coccidiostat effects on the control and treatment of chicken coccidiosis in experimental and natural infection. It is a competitive antagonist of PABA in protozoa and bacteria. Feeding poultry with sulfonamides may prevent clinical signs and reduce oocyst production. This drug can also protect the animal’s immunity. According to a study, a combination of toltrazuril and sulfaclozine sodium can help in the treatment of E. tenella in broiler chickens.
Treated animals can reduce their signs of droopiness and depression. Also, prompt treatment can reduce the chances of pale comb in chicken. It can also address the symptoms of water, mucous, and blood in droppings. Proper treatment can normalize the appetite of the animals and improve their body condition.
Is only Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder enough for treating certain diseases?
The treatment process depends on the animal’s health condition and the veterinarian’s choice. Animals should not receive this antibiotic for more than 7 days. If the animals have improved overall health conditions after 72 hours, the treatment should continue for 48 hours to prevent relapse and emergence of resistance. Animals should also have a boosted immune system during the treatment period, which can be achieved with other supplements. Other drugs or supplements must be included by the veterinarian if some disease is present.
Is this antibiotic only appropriate for poultry?
Sulfonamides are widely used in veterinary medicine and can be used for treating various infections. This includes the treatment of mastitis and metritis in cattle, as well as some respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. The veterinarian should decide the form of the drug before administering it.
How should Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder be stored?
This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location below 25°C.
What is the withdrawal period for Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder?
The withdrawal time is 14 days for meat and 11 days for eggs. Sulfonamide residues are common in the poultry industry and must be avoided. Sulfonamides can lead to allergic reactions in people. Each country has its own withdrawing periods and should be respected accordingly.
Dosage
How much Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder should be given to poultry?
For coccidiosis, the usual dose is 50-110mg (sulfaclozine) per kg of body weight. The duration of treatment should be 3-5 consecutive days.
The dosage depends on the disease, the animal’s age, and the body weight of the animal.
Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Sulfaclozine Soluble Powder.
There have been some reported cases of bleeding in poultry. In the event of this adverse effect, it is recommended to add vitamin K to the diet of the afflicted animal. Long-term treatment may cause sulfa toxicity.
Serious side effects may include allergic reactions. Hypersensitivity or direct toxic effects are one of the most concerning effects of this antibiotic. Possible side effects include urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, skin rashes, drug fever, and polyarthritis. Hemolytic anemia and agranulocytosis can also occur.
Prolonged treatment can lead to the following side effects:
- bone marrow depression
- hepatitis and icterus
- peripheral neuritis
- myelin degeneration in the spinal cord and peripheral nerves
- photosensitization
- stomatitis
- conjunctivitis
This antibiotic might lead to decreased egg production and growth.
