What is Colistin Sulfate?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Colistin Sulfate

Colistin Sulfate Premix is an antibiotic drug used to treat certain infections in poultry and livestock animals like cows, sheep, and pigs. This feed/water additive is indicated for the treatment of intestinal infections and diseases like scour, piglet paratyphoid, colibacillosis, and pullorum disease.

Colistin is not well-absorbed orally, so it is typically used to treat infections in the gastrointestinal system.

Colistin is classified as a polymyxin. It works by interfering with and breaking down the cell membrane of the bacteria. Colistin shows activity against many gram-negative microorganisms, including E. coli, Salmonella, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter Cloacae, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

This drug interacts with the outer membrane of the organisms (lipopolysaccharide molecules). This causes displacement of calcium and magnesium ions, and it destabilizes the outer membrane of the organisms. This destabilization of the outer membrane leads to cell leakage and cell senescence.

According to pharmacokinetic data, Colistin Sulfate is poorly absorbed after oral administration to calves and pigs because serum and tissue concentrations are undetectable in these species. In chickens, Colistin Sulfate is detectable for up to 6 hours after administration in the drinking water.

The usage of colistin was limited in the past, but recently, it is used as a first-line treatment for severe multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. This medicine is also used for intensive care animals and as a last-line treatment. This drug leads to high clinical cure rates.

Colistin is also known by the name polymyxin E. It is because it is synthesized non-ribosomally by Bacillus polymyxa subspecies olistinus.

This medication is manufactured in packaging sizes such as 1kg, 5kg and 25 kg bags and is also available in soluble powder form.

What animals can be treated with Colistin Sulfate Premix?

This medicine is recommended for poultry and livestock like calves, sheep, and pigs.

What is the most common reason for Colistin Sulfate Premix administration in animals?

Colistin Sulfate Premix in animals is mostly used for treating bacterial infections like Gram-negative bacteria. It is especially effective against highly resistant bacteria, and it is used as a last-resort drug.

Colistin is used for treating respiratory infections in poultry caused by E. coli and other Gram-negative bacteria. It is also used for treating gastrointestinal infections of the different parts of the digestive tract.

How is Colistin Sulfate Premix used?

This product has been manufactured as powder, which is intended to be mixed into feed. The product should be used immediately when mixed with feed.

What are the specific methods of colistin sulfate premix administration in animals?

Colistin sulfate is mostly used in feed premixes and leads to normal uniform distribution of the antibiotic in the feed. This is an easy method for animal consumption of antibiotics.

Another method for adding colistin sulfate is in the drinking water of the animals. This is the most common method for adding colistin in poultry farming, and the antibiotic is dissolved in the water supply.

Other appropriate administration includes oral in syringes and other oral dosing devices.

The choice of administration depends on the clinical condition of the animal and the animal species. It should always be given as aseptically as possible. Colistin sulfate should be added to clean water and food.

Why is Colistin Sulfate Premix used in livestock?

Colistin Sulfate Premix can cure yellow scour and white scour in piglets and can restore healthy gut flora in livestock.

The yellow score is coccidiosis - a protozoal disease that affects the small intestines in suckling piglets. Colistin treatment can reduce creamy diarrhea.

White scour is a common disease in calves and piglets caused by different bacteria in the digestive tract. Colistin treatment can remove the bacteria and cure the animals.

Piglet paratyphoid infection is caused by Salmonella bacteria and is a disease of public health concern that can be treated with colistin.

Why is Colistin Sulfate Premix used in poultry?

This premix is used in poultry for treating colibacillosis and pullorum disease.

Colibacillosis is a secondary infection that affects young broilers and poults and is caused by E.coli. Treating this disease can be very expensive and long due to the resistance to bacterial drugs. Colistin sulfate premix can be useful as a last-resort drug. Good hygiene practices should be combined during the treatment process for best results.

Pullorum disease in poultry or white diarrhea is caused by Salmonella enterica pullorum and the affected birds are anorectic, weak, depressed, have difficulty breathing, swollen joints, and white fecal material. Colistin in combination with other veterinary-approved products can improve body weight and weight gain in animals affected with pullorum disease.

How should Colistin Sulfate Premix be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 30°C.

Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Colistin Sulfate?

The withdrawal period for meat is approximately 21 days after treatment.

Note: This drug should be prescribed only by a doctor of veterinary medicine.

Dosage

How much Colistin Sulfate Premix should be given to livestock?

The usual dose is 100mg per 100L of drinking water. The duration of treatment is 3 - 5 days.

How much Colistin Sulfate Premix should be given to chickens?

The usual dose is 750g per 1000kg of feed. The duration of treatment is 3 - 5 days.

Treatment with Colistin Sulfate Premix should be limited to the minimum time necessary to avoid antibiotic resistance. The dose depends on the animal's clinical condition and body weight, During the treatment, this should be the only source of feed for the animals.

If the dose is less than the recommended, the treatment will not be effective. If the animal consumes more than recommended, toxicity signs might be apparent. Common signs of overdosing are soft feces and tympany in pigs. Overdosing can lead to gastrointestinal issues, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. The adverse signs depend on the administered dose.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Precautions

Do NOT use Colistin Sulfate Premix for an animal that:

  • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • is a chicken or goose in the laying period.
  • has an active rumen or microbial flora.
  • has serious renal impairment.

Do not continue treatment with this drug past one week.

Misapplication of this medicine may cause an increase in bacterial resistance to colistin sulfate, which decreases the effectiveness of treatment with polymyxins.

Use prudence when administering Colistin Sulfate to animals with compromised renal function, given that this medication is primarily eliminated through the kidneys. It may be essential to consistently monitor renal status in these instances to avert the risk of potential drug accumulation and associated toxicity.

Mixing Colistin Sulfate with other products is not advisable.

Colistin sulfate's efficacy may decrease the presence of calcium ions so avoid mixing this product with solutions that contain calcium.
