Benefits

Melatonin benefits the sleep process

Taking melatonin supplements before bed can reduce sleep latency, which directs the time it takes to fall asleep. It can increase total sleep time, leading to improved sleep duration. Melatonin supplementation has been found to effectively counteract jet lag, a temporary sleep disorder experienced by individuals who change time zones. This is beneficial for frequent travelers or individuals who frequently change time zones due to work or other reasons.

Melatonin benefits the eye health

This hormone is also an antioxidant, which can reduce the risk of many eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration. It neutralizes free radicals and decreases inflammation. However, it is not a definite treatment for eye disorders, and other supplements and drugs should be considered.

Melatonin benefits the gastrointestinal health

Melatonin supplementation can alleviate symptoms of acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can protect the esophagus's lining from damage caused by irritants such as acid, alcohol, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This can help reduce inflammation and discomfort associated with these conditions.

Melatonin benefits in cases of tinnitus (ear ringing)

This is a condition that represents ear ringing. Melatonin supplements have been reported to help reduce the background noise associated with tinnitus. It can help individuals who experience difficulty falling asleep due to this condition.

Melatonin benefits in cases of migraine

Melatonin possesses the ability to inhibit pain sensation, making it useful for treating migraines. It is recommended to consult with a doctor to determine if melatonin supplementation is suitable for you in cases of migraine. Migraine treatment often requires other medications or supplements.

Is only Melatonin enough to improve sleep in people?

This supplement can improve and regulate the sleep-wake cycle in individuals. It is a hormone naturally produced in the human body, synthesized by the pineal gland in the brain. But it is also present in other areas, such as the eyes, bone marrow, and gut.

In some cases, supplementation only with this hormone can effectively regulate the sleep process. However, in severe cases of sleep disturbances, the underlying issue needs to be determined and then treated adequately.

Consult with a healthcare professional to determine whether supplementation with this hormone is sufficient to enhance the sleep-wake cycle for you, depending on your current health condition.

This supplement can lead to positive effects on the quality and duration of sleep and is commonly used to manage various sleeping disorders.

How does this supplement work?

This supplement impacts the circadian rhythm, sending information to the human brain about the appropriate times for sleep, wakefulness, and eating. It can also regulate various physiological processes, including body temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, body weight, and the secretion of certain hormones.

Melatonin levels rise during darkness and send signals to the body about sleep time. They decrease in the morning, promoting wakefulness and boosting energy.

One mechanism of action involves melatonin binding to brain receptors, which reduces nerve activity. It can also decrease dopamine levels, which are related to alertness and wakefulness.

Individuals experiencing deficiencies in melatonin may have difficulties sleeping at night, and melatonin supplementation in various forms can help in solving this issue.

Who benefits the most from Melatonin?

Melatonin can provide benefits to individuals experiencing difficulty sleeping, including those who work different shifts and struggle to adapt to their circadian rhythm. Individuals who consume alcohol or smoke excessively, as well as those with high caffeine intake, may find relief with melatonin supplementation. Aging individuals and those taking specific medications can also benefit from this product.

People exposed to blue light, such as remote workers or those who frequently use electronic devices before bedtime, can also consider melatonin supplementation.

We advise consulting a doctor before initiating melatonin supplementation to confirm it is appropriate for individual circumstances and health conditions.

Can Melatonin have adverse interactions?

Melatonin is generally considered safe, but it can interact with various medications, altering their effectiveness and potentially increasing the risk of side effects. Interactions may occur with sedatives, blood thinners, immunosuppressants, diabetic medications, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, anticonvulsants, and oral contraceptives. Melatonin can also interact with alcohol, so avoid drinking while using this supplement.

Consult a doctor before taking melatonin, especially if you have a pre-existing condition or are currently taking medications.

Can pregnant women take Melatonin?

Melatonin levels are important during pregnancy because they fluctuate throughout the trimesters. In the first and second trimesters, the peak of melatonin levels decreases. Toward the end of pregnancy, these levels begin to rise again. The hormone levels reach maximum before returning to pre-pregnancy levels after delivery.

Melatonin is a hormone that crosses the placenta and can influence the development of the fetus. It contributes to the establishment of a normal circadian rhythm in both the nervous and endocrine systems. It protects the fetal nervous system and possesses antioxidant properties that are beneficial for fetal development.

Some studies suggest that melatonin supplementation is not recommended during pregnancy, but you should consult with a doctor before considering this supplement. Your gynecologist can provide personalized advice on improving sleep quality during pregnancy and will determine the safest approach for both you and your baby.

Should I take this supplement without a prescription?

In most countries, this supplement is available without a prescription, depending on the country’s regulations. However, to achieve the desired effects and provide safe usage, consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended.

Can children take this supplement?

Melatonin supplements can be considered in certain cases for children with developmental disorders like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Consult with a doctor to determine if melatonin products are suitable for your child. Melatonin supplements for children are available as gummies or syrup.

Based on your child's specific health condition and needs, the doctor will provide recommendations regarding dosage and usage.

How should Melatonin be stored?

This supplement should be stored in a dry and cool place. It should be protected from direct sunlight and kept away from children and pets.

What is the evidence for Melatonin’s impact on sleep in people?

This is one of the most popular supplements used to promote better sleep quality in people. It is recommended by many healthcare professionals. Many studies confirm this.

Efficacy of melatonin with behavioural sleep-wake scheduling for delayed sleep-wake phase disorder: A double-blind, randomised clinical trial

This trial investigated the efficacy of 0.5mg melatonin, combined with behavioral sleep-wake scheduling, in improving sleep initiation among individuals clinically diagnosed with Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder (DSWPD) characterized by delayed endogenous melatonin rhythm relative to desired bedtime (DBT) requirements.

The study involved 307 participants, with 116 receiving melatonin. Results indicated that individuals administered melatonin experienced a 34-minute earlier sleep onset compared to the placebo group. Melatonin treatment led to increased sleep efficiency at the first attempt to sleep (SE T1), along with reduced PROMIS sleep-related impairment, PROMIS sleep disturbance, insomnia severity, and functional disability. A lot of patients had more than minimal clinician-rated improvement following melatonin treatment (52.8%) compared to placebo (24.0%).

The findings demonstrate that administering melatonin 1 hour before DBT, in conjunction with behavioral sleep-wake scheduling, effectively improved both objective and subjective measures of sleep disturbances and related impairments in individuals with DSWPD exhibiting a delayed circadian phase relative to DBT. These improvements were primarily due to the sleep-promoting effects of melatonin, combined with behavioral sleep-wake scheduling strategies.
