What is Tiopronin?
Active Ingredients: Tiopronin
Tiopronin Tablets are a drug used to prevent kidney stones caused by cystinuria. It is used in combination with other methods (such as high fluid intake, alkali therapy, and diet changes). It is a second-line treatment that is used if these other methods were not effective or if penicillamine cannot be taken.
Tiopronin is a cystine-binding thiol drug. The active ingredient works by making cystine more dissolvable in the urine.

Uses
What is Tiopronin used for?
It is used to prevent kidney stones in people with severe cystinuria. It is used in combination with other methods of kidney stone prevention, such as high fluid intake, alkali therapy, and diet changes.
How should Tiopronin Tablets be used?
This medication is intended to be taken orally. Tiopronin Tablets should be taken on an empty stomach or 1 hour before or 2 hours after eating a meal.
What dose should be taken?
For preventing nephrolithiasis, the usual dose is 800mg/day, divided and taken twice a day. The dose should be adjusted to reach a maintenance dose (around 1000mg/day). A lower starting dose may be required in some patients.
The dosage is based on medical condition, response to treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Tiopronin Tablets.
Common side effects may include fever, usually during the first month of therapy.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- bruising
- cough
- diarrhea
- decreased sexual ability and desire
- mouth sores
- fever (common during the first month of treatment)

- tiredness or weakness
- unexplained weight changes
