Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim Oral Suspension is a combination antibiotic drug used to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections, such as enteritis, bronchitis, and otitis media. It is also effective against acute, recurrent, or chronic urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Sulfamethoxazole is classified as a sulfonamide antibiotic. It works by interfering with the folic acid synthesis in some bacteria. Trimethoprim belongs to the class of antifolate antibiotics. These two antibiotics display complementary mechanisms of action, thus enhancing the effectiveness of treatment.

The combination of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim is also known by the name of Co-trimoxazole.

How should Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim Oral Suspension be used?

This medication is manufactured as a liquid to be taken orally. The suspension should be shaken before use.

What dose should be taken?

For mild-moderate infections in children over 2 months old, the usual dose is 8-12mg/kg (Trimethoprim), divided and given every 6-12 hours. The duration of treatment is 7-14 days.

For mild-moderate infections in adults, the usual dose is 160mg (Trimethoprim), given twice per day.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim Oral Suspension.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

Precautions

  • You have a history of low blood platelet levels caused by trimethoprim or sulfa medicine.
  • You have liver damage or severe kidney problem.
  • You have anemia caused by low levels of folate in the blood.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Before treatment, consult your doctor regarding any medications you are taking to address potential drug interactions.Many known drug interactions exist, including dofetilide, methenamine, amantadine, digoxin, cyclosporine, ACE inhibitors, and diuretics.
