Ribavirin Injection is a drug used to treat some types of viral infection. It is indicated for the treatment of chronic Hepatitis C, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), and some viral hemorrhagic fevers. For the treatment of Hepatitis C, it is typically combined with other medications like simeprevir or sofosbuvir.

This medication is effective against Lassa fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and Hantavirus infection, but is not used for Ebola or Marburg infection.

Ribavirin is a nucleoside analog that belongs to the class of medicines called antivirals. It works by interfering with viral replication in certain DNA and RNA viruses.

What is Ribavirin used for?

It is used to treat viral infections such as:

How is a Ribavirin Injection used?

This medication is manufactured to be administered intravenously by a healthcare professional.

What dose should be given?

For the treatment of hemorrhagic fever, the typical dosage is:

  • A loading dose of 30mg/kg with a maximum single dose of up to 2g.
  • 16mg/kg, with a maximum dose of up to 1g, every 6 hours for 4 days.
  • 8mg/kg, with a maximum dose of 500mg, every 8 hours for 6 days.

For the treatment of infections caused by adenovirus, there is some variety in regimen. The typical dosage is:

  • A loading dose of 33mg/kg.
  • 16mg/kg, every 6 hours for 4 days.
  • 8mg/kg, every 8 hours for 3 to 6 days.

Side Effects

Precautions
