What is Rabeprazole?

Active Ingredients: Rabeprazole

Rabeprazole Capsules are used to treat symptoms or conditions caused by excess stomach acid production. It is indicated for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition where the stomach produces too much acid.

It is also used in H. pylori infections and to help prevent GI bleeding during treatment with NSAIDs.

Rabeprazole (Rabeprazol) is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is a prodrug that is converted into an active sulfenamide form in the body which works by inhibiting the activity of H+, K+ATPase within the gastric cells.

Uses

What is Rabeprazole used for?

It is used as a short-term treatment for the symptoms caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also used to treat certain conditions associated with excess stomach acid, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

How are Rabeprazole Capsules used?

This medication is manufactured to be taken orally.

What dose should be taken?

  • For non-erosive symptoms of GERD, the usual dose is 20mg, taken once per day. The duration of treatment is 4-8 weeks.
  • For erosive esophagitis associated with GERD, the usual dose is 20mg, taken once per day. The duration of short-term treatment is 4-16 weeks.
  • For hypersecretory conditions, the usual dose is 60mg, taken once per day. If necessary, the dosage may increase to 100mg (once per day) or 60mg (twice per day).
  • For H. pylori infection, the usual dose is 20mg, taken twice per day. The duration of treatment is 7-14 days.

Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for more specific guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Rabeprazole Capsules.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • infections
  • pain
  • gastrointestinal disturbances
  • headache

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • signs of an allergic reaction
  • severe stomach pain
  • sudden pain or difficulty moving
  • new or worsening lupus symptoms
  • convulsions
  • signs of low magnesium levels
  • signs of bleeding (if concurrent treatment with warfarin)
  • signs of a kidney issue

Precautions

Do NOT use Rabeprazole Capsules if:

  • You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
  • You are currently being treated with rilpivirine.
  • You have had reactions to taking Rabeprazole or similar medications in the past.

This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, including:

  • liver disease
  • osteoporosis or osteopenia
  • lupus
  • low levels of magnesium

This medicine should only be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding if the benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.

Rabeprazole has not been shown safe for children under 12 years old.

Many drugs are known to interact with Rabeprazole including antibiotics, digoxin, diuretics, methotrexate, or warfarin.
