Pentoxifylline Injection is a drug used to improve blood flow. It is also used to improve limb function and reduce symptoms of intermittent claudication that are associated with chronic occlusive arterial disease. Pentoxifylline may be used alone or in combination with other medications.

Pentoxifylline is a xanthine derivative that is structurally similar to theophylline or caffeine. It is classified as a hemorheological agent.

What is Pentoxifylline used for?

It is used to improve blood flow due to circulation problems. This reduces aching, cramping and tiredness in the limbs.

How is Pentoxifylline Injection used?

This medication is manufactured as a solution, which is intended to be administered by IV injection.

What dose should be given?

The usual dose is 100ml, given by slow intravenous injection.

When given as intravenous infusion, 100-600mg of Pentoxifylline should be mixed with 100-500ml Ringer Lactate, 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution, or 5% Glucose solution.

100mg of Pentoxifylline should be administered over at least 60 minutes.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Pentoxifylline Injection.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • dizziness or headache
  • gastrointestinal effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, gas, bloating, upset stomach)

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • signs of an allergic reaction
  • chest pain or pounding heartbeats
  • red/pink urine
  • lightheadedness
  • signs of stomach bleeding

Precautions

Do NOT use Pentoxifylline Injection if:

  • You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.

This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, including:

  • coronary artery disease
  • heart, liver, or kidney disease
  • history of bleeding in the brain or eyes, heart attack, or stroke
  • gastric or peptic ulcer
  • recent surgery
  • concurrent treatment with theophylline or blood-clotting medications

Do not use this medication while pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.

Some drugs known to interact include theophylline, blood thinners like warfarin, ketorolac, enoxaparin, fondaparinux, and tizanidine. This not a complete list. Please consult a healthcare professional before treatment.
