Labetalol HCl Injection is an antihypertensive drug used to treat severe high blood pressure in adults and children. It is used to treat hypertensive emergency incidents, including ones associated with pregnancy. This drug may also be used to achieve controlled hypotension during anaesthesia.

Labetalol is classified as a beta-blocker. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing the heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure.

What is Labetalol used for?

It is used to treat severe hypertension or emergency hypertensive incidents.

How is Labetalol Injection used?

This medication is manufactured as a solution, which is intended to be injected intravenously. Patients should be in the supine or left lateral position during administration.

What dose should be given?

For emergency hypertensive incidents, the usual dose is 40-80mg, given every 10 minutes as necessary. For pregnancy-associated hypertensive emergencies, the usual dose is 20-80mg, given every 10-30 minutes IV.

After the injection, it is recommended to lie down for up to 3 hours. Standing up may cause dizziness or lightheadedness.

For acute severe hypertension in pediatrics, the usual dose is 0.2-1mg/kg, given once IV.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Labetalol HCl Injection.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • dizziness
  • drowsiness or tiredness
  • nausea or vomiting

  • lightheadedness
  • slow heart rate or weak pulse
  • shortness of breath
  • severe headache
  • blurry vision
  • signs of a liver problem

Precautions

Do NOT use Labetalol HCl Injection if:

  • You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
  • You have asthma.
  • You have 2nd or 3rd degree AV block or uncontrolled heart failure.
  • You have severe hypotension.
  • You have bradycardia that has caused you to faint.
  • You have certain heart problems.

This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions. It is important to consult with a doctor if you have any health conditions, including:

  • congestive heart failure or angina
  • liver or kidney disease
  • breathing problems like emphysema
  • a pheochromocytoma
  • diabetes
  • allergies

Do not use this medication while pregnant or breastfeeding. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.

Some drugs are known to interact with Labetalol HCl, including other blood pressure medicines, heart medications, oral diabetes medicines (e.g. insulin), antidepressants, bronchodilators, aminophylline, theophylline, and cimetidine.

This drug may affect your pupils, so it is important to inform a surgeon if you need eye surgery in the future.

This medication may affect the results of certain urine lab tests, including drug-screening tests. Inform your doctor if you are undergoing any urine tests while taking this medication.
