Irinotecan Injection is an anticancer drug used for the chemotherapy treatment of metastatic cancer of the colon or rectum. It is a first-line therapy used in combination with fluorouracil and leucovorin. Irinotecan can be used for patients whose disease has progressed or recurred after standard treatment.

The active ingredient, Irinotecan, is a plant alkaloid and a topoisomerase I inhibitor. The active ingredient works by stopping the growth of cancer cells.

Uses

What is Irinotecan used for?

It is used to treat cancer. It is a first-line chemotherapy option for metastatic cancer of the colon or rectum. This drug can also be used for patients whose cancer has progressed or recurred after the standard treatment with fluorouracil.

How should Irinotecan Injection be used?

This medication is manufactured as a liquid solution, which is to be given by injection into a vein. It should only be administered by a doctor or healthcare provider.

What dose should be given?

As monotherapy for colorectal cancer, the usual regimen is 125mg/m² given by infusion over 90 minutes. It is administered on days 1, 8, 15, 22 followed by 2 weeks of no treatment. The cycle should then be repeated.

The usual dose for adults and children is dependent on the type of cancer, the treatment cycle, and other general factors. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Irinotecan Injection.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
