What is Fosfomycin?
Active Ingredients: Fosfomycin Sodium
Fosfomycin Sodium for Injection is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory system, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues. This medication can be used as a monotherapy or it may be used in combination with other antibiotics to treat some resistant infections, such as acute cystitis.
Fosfomycin Sodium is classified within the novel class of medicines called phosphonic antibiotics. It shows a broad spectrum of bactericidal action against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It works by inhibiting cell wall biogenesis.

Uses
What is Fosfomycin used for?
It is used to treat bacterial infections such as osteomyelitis, bacterial meningitis, and urinary tract infections (acute cystitis).
How is Fosfomycin for Injection used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder, which is packaged in a vial. As an injectable form, it is to be given directly into a vein (IV). Reconstituted solutions should be used immediately.
What dose should be given?
The exact dosage is based on the severity of the infections, age, gender and weight:
- For complicated urinary tract infections, the usual dose is 12-16g, divided and given in 2-3 doses per day.
- For osteomyelitis, the usual dose is 12-24g, divided and given in 2-3 doses per day.
- For bacterial meningitis, the usual dose is 16-24g, divided and given in 3-4 doses per day.
The maximum is 8g per dose.

Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Fosfomycin Sodium for Injection.

- pain at the site of injection
- upset stomach
- diarrhea

- general weakness
- vaginal itching or discharge
