Flucloxacillin Sodium Powder for Injection is an antibiotic used for infections caused by gram-positive organisms, including some strains of beta-lactamase-producing staphylococci. It is indicated for skin and soft tissue infections, infected skin conditions, respiratory tract infections, and ear infections.

This medication may be used to treat osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible organisms. Flucloxacillin is sometimes prescribed to prevent infection in patients undergoing certain surgeries or procedures.

Flucloxacillin is classified in the family of antibiotics called isoxazolyl penicillins. It is a beta-lactam antibiotic with a narrow spectrum of activity.

What is Flucloxacillin used for?

It is used to treat susceptible bacterial infections, including osteomyelitis, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infections, infected skin conditions (e.g. infected wounds or impetigo), respiratory tract infections, and ear infections. This antibiotic is also administered as prophylaxis against infection in certain surgeries.

How is Flucloxacillin Sodium Powder for Injection used?

This medicine has been manufactured as a fine powder intended for reconstitution. It is typically injected intravenously, though the exact method of administration depends on the type and severity of infection.

250-500mg of Flucloxacillin should be dissolved in 5-10ml Water for Injection before administration.

What dose should be taken?

The usual dose for adults is 250mg-1g IV, given 4 times per day.

For surgical prophylaxis, the usual dose is 1-2g IV, given at the induction of anesthesia. Additional doses of 500mg should follow after 6 hours, for up to 72 hours.

Side Effects

Precautions

Do NOT use Flucloxacillin Sodium Powder for Injection if:

High-dose therapy is associated with hypokalemia and occasionally hypernatraemia. For treatment lasting longer than 5 days, it is important to monitor electrolytes, blood count, and renal function.
