What is Finasteride?

Therapeutic Class:

Active Ingredients: Finasteride

Finasteride Tablets are a drug used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia and to reduce the progression of an enlarged prostate. This drug helps reduce symptoms associated with these conditions, such as difficulty with urination. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications.

Finasteride Tablets are indicated to prevent or slow the progression of male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). In some cases, oral finasteride therapy can be combined with a topical treatment to increase hair regrowth.

Finasteride is a 4-azasteroid. It is classified as a dermatological agent and a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. The active ingredient works by decreasing the quantity of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body.

DHT causes the prostate to grow larger, so decreased DHT quantity helps prevent the prostate from enlarging. As a balding scalp contains increased amounts of DHT, this drug can decrease DHT levels in this area, which increases hair growth. Though it is unclear, finasteride may be able to interrupt the development of androgenetic alopecia in those with a genetic predisposition.

Finasteride Tablets are produced with a dosage of 1mg or 2mg. The tablets are packaged on a blister and are available for distribution as a box of 100 tablets.

AdvaCare Pharma is a global supplier of this medication. We offer a wide range of high-quality and cost-effective medical supplies that are available for distribution. Finasteride Tablets are produced in our GMP-certified facilities in China, India, and the USA.

Uses

What is Finasteride used for?

It is used to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. It is also used to treat mild to moderate hair loss in men.

In rare cases, Finasteride has been used off-label to treat hirsutism in women or as part of hormone replacement therapy.

How should Finasteride Tablets be used?

This medication is intended to be taken orally. Finasteride Tablets should be taken with a full glass of water and can be taken with or without food.

How long will it take to see results from Finasteride?

If being treated for male hair loss, it may take up to 3 months for visible results from this medication and 6-12 months for significant visible results. This medicine should be used regularly for the full benefits. After discontinuing Finasteride, reversal of effects will typically occur and there may be a slow decline in hair count within the next 12 months.

How should Finasteride Tablets be stored?

Finasteride Tablets should be kept in their blisters until use. It is recommended to keep the medicine at room temperature in a location that is out of direct sunlight, moisture, and heat.

Do not freeze the tablets. The tablets should be kept in a place that is out of the reach of children or pets. Do not take the medication if it is past its expiry date.

What precautions should be taken with Finasteride Tablets?

Women who are pregnant or potentially should not handle this medication. It is advised to wear gloves while handling this drug, as Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin. The hands should be washed thoroughly after touching crushed or broken tablets.

What dose should be taken?

Adult Dosing Recommended dosage may vary based on different medical conditions:

  • For symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the usual dose is 5mg taken once per day. The duration of treatment should be at least 6 months. This drug can be used as monotherapy or in combination with doxazosin. It is recommended to evaluate the patient's response to the medication after 12 weeks to 6 months.
  • For androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), the usual dose is 1mg taken once per day. Treatment should continue for at least 3 months. For more severe cases of hair loss, doses up to 2-5mg may be considered. After discontinuation, withdrawal will lead to the reversal of effects within 12 months.
  • For female hirsutism (off-label), the usual dose is 5mg taken once per day.

Renal Dosing No adjustment is necessary for patients with renal impairment. Recommendations for HD/PD have not been defined.

Hepatic Dosing Recommendations for dose adjustments for patients with hepatic impairment have not been defined. Caution is advised for prescribing Finasteride to this population, and it is recommended to monitor the patient during treatment.

Pediatric Dosing The use of Finasteride is not recommended for children.

Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

What happens if a dose is missed?

Who can use Finasteride?

Finasteride Tablets can be given to adult men, but caution is advised for specific groups of patients.

Pregnant Finasteride is contraindicated for use in pregnant women. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin, so it is important to note that women who are pregnant should not handle this drug.

Animal studies have indicated a risk of harm to male fetuses.

Breastfeeding Finasteride is contraindicated for use in breastfeeding women.

Women This medicine is not indicated for use in women.

Children The use of this drug in pediatric patients is not recommended. Guidelines for safety and efficacy have not been established.

Geriatric Studies have not shown specific issues for this population.

Other warnings

It is advised to rule out any other urological disease before beginning treatment with Finasteride.

For patients with liver disease, this drug should be used cautiously.

For patients with obstructive uropathy, it is advised to express caution. Patients with large residual urinary volume or severely diminished urinary flow should be monitored.

In the presence of prostate cancer, this drug may cause decreased PSA levels. This may hide certain symptoms associated with prostate cancer.

Though Finasteride may decrease the risk of low-grade prostate cancer in patients over 55 years old, it may increase the risk of high-grade cancer. Therefore, it is not recommended for the prevention of prostate cancer.

There are rare reports of male breast cancer associated with Finasteride.

Precautions

  • You are female, a child, or transgender.
  • You may have prostate cancer.

Due to possible drug interactions, consult with your doctor about any medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking before your treatment. Some medications may require additional monitoring or decreased doses. Finasteride may interact with drugs such as certain antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin, erythromycin, isoniazid), certain antifungals (e.g. itraconazole, ketoconazole, levoketoconazole), certain antineoplastic agents, antiepileptic drugs, pentobarbital, and herbal products like St John’s Wort.

This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, so it is important to consult with a doctor if you have any health conditions, such as hepatic impairment, urinary obstruction, or potential pregnancy.

Finasteride is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery, as it is not known to cause drowsiness or dizziness.

As some finasteride is excreted in semen, it is recommended to use a condom while being treated with this medication.

Finasteride may interfere with certain types of lab results. It is known to decrease PSA serum levels within 6 months of treatment. It is important to inform laboratory staff if you are taking finasteride.

Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant should not handle Finasteride Tablets, as this drug may cause birth defects. It is known that crushed or broken tablets can be absorbed through the skin. If a woman does come into contact with finasteride, it is advised for her to thoroughly wash her hands and the affected area immediately.

Finasteride Treatment of Female Pattern Hair Loss

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of oral finasteride therapy associated with an oral contraceptive containing drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol in premenopausal women with female pattern hair loss.

This study included 37 women with female pattern hair loss who were treated with oral finasteride, 2.5mg/d while taking an oral contraceptive. With the help of video dermoscopy and global photography.

At the 12-month follow-up, 23 out of 37 patients showed improvement according to global photography assessments. Of these, 12 patients were slightly improved, 8 were moderately improved, and 3 were greatly improved. No improvement was observed in 13 patients, and one patient experienced a worsening of the condition. Additionally, 12 patients had a statistically significant increase in their hair density score (P = .002). No adverse reactions to the drug were reported.

The conclusion is that 62% of the patients demonstrated some improvement in their hair loss with the use of finasteride, 2.5mg/d, while taking the oral contraceptive.

Finasteride in the treatment of men with frontal male pattern hair loss

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of finasteride 1mg/day in men with frontal (anterior/mid) scalp hair thinning.

This is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study that lasted 1 year and was followed by a 1-year open extension.

The results showed an increase in hair count in the frontal scalp of finasteride-treated patients (P < .001), as well as significant improvements in patient, investigator, and global photographic assessments.

This study suggests that men with hair loss in the anterior/mid area of the scalp can benefit from finasteride. This can lead to slowed hair loss and increased hair growth.
