What is Dactinomycin?
Active Ingredients: Dactinomycin
Dactinomycin for Injection is an antineoplastic drug used in cancer chemotherapy. It is used to treat some solid tumors, such as Ewing sarcoma. This drug can be used alone or as a combination therapy to treat gestational trophoblastic neoplasia and recurrent or locoregional solid malignancies.
The active ingredient, Dactinomycin, is classified as an antitumor antibiotic. It works by slowing down or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body by blocking topoisomerase 2, an enzyme needed by cancer cells.
Dactinomycin is also called “actinomycin D”.

Uses
What is Dactinomycin used for?
It is used to treat cancer, either as a monotherapy or with other medications. Some of the types of cancer it can treat are:
- Ewing sarcoma
- metastatic nonseminomatous testicular carcinoma
- rhabdomyosarcoma
- trophoblastic neoplasms
- Wilms' tumors
When combined with Methotrexate, this drug is used to treat gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.
How should Dactinomycin Powder be used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder and stored in a vial. The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by injection into a muscle or vein.
As Dactinomycin for Injection is a cytotoxic drug, caution should be used when preparing and administering the solution. Goggles, gloves, and protective gowns are recommended.
What dose should be given?
For Wilms tumor, the usual dose is 45mcg/kg IV as part of a multidrug chemotherapy.
The usual dose for adults and children depends on the type of disease and the patient's general condition. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects

- blood in the urine
- heartburn
- diarrhea
- cough

Precautions
Do NOT use Dactinomycin for Injection:
