What is Cytarabine?

Cytarabine Injection is an antineoplastic drug used in cancer chemotherapy. It has been manufactured for intravenous use in the treatment of hematological malignancies, such as acute myeloid leukemia, acute and chronic myelocytic leukemia, meningeal leukemia, erythroleukemia, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
The active ingredient, Cytarabine, is a chemotherapy agent that belongs to a group of drugs known as antimetabolites. It works by interfering with the growth of cancer cells when they absorb the active ingredient. Cytarabine is also known as "cytosine arabinoside".

Uses
What is Cytarabine used for?
It is used to treat hematological malignancies, such as:
- acute and chronic myelocytic leukemia
- acute myeloid leukemia
- erythroleukemia
- meningeal leukemia
- non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
How is Cytarabine Injection used?
This medication is manufactured as a powder and stored in a vial.
The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by injection into a muscle or vein.
What dose should be given?
For meningeal leukemia, the usual dose is 30mg/m², given intrathecally.
The usual dose for adults and children depends on the type of disease and the patient's general condition.
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Cytarabine Injection.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- nausea and vomiting
- diarrhea
- oral and anal inflammation
- fever
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- pneumonia
- neuritis
- sore throat
- chest pain
- pericarditis
- alopecia
- dizziness
- pancreatitis

Precautions
Do NOT use Cytarabine Injection if: • You are allergic to any of the components within the drug.

Driving or operating machinery should be okay; however, the medication may cause dizziness in some patients.
