What is Artesunate?
Active Ingredients: Artesunate
Artesunate Tablets are used for the treatment of uncomplicated cases of malaria. It is a first-line treatment option for adults and children, and it is generally well tolerated by patients. This medicine is only for attacks due to the Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasite. It is not used for the prevention of malaria.
Artesunate is a water-soluble hemisuccinate derivative of dihydroartemisinin. It is one of the few artemisinin derivatives that is water soluble.

Uses
What is Artesunate used for?
It is used to treat falciparum malaria in adults and children.
How are Artesunate tablets used?
Artesunate tablets have been manufactured to be taken by mouth.
What dose should be taken?
For adults, the usual dosage is:
- 2 tablets twice on the first day
- 1 tablet twice a day for the subsequent days (generally 5-7 days in total)
For children, the usual dosage is:
- 1 tablet, taken twice on the first day
- 1 tablet daily for the subsequent days
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Artesunate Tablets.
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- slow heart rate
- mild gastrointestinal disturbances
- abnormal liver function tests
- low counts of pre-stages of red blood cells
- low white blood cell counts
- severe allergic reactions
- dizziness
- ringing in ears and a rash, sometimes with hives

Precautions
Do NOT use Artesunate Tablets if: • You are hypersensitive to artesunate or any of the other ingredients within the tablet.
Possible interactions with Artesunate Tablets may occur in combination with amodiaquine or with efavirenz. Consult with your doctor about any medication you are taking before your treatment with artesunate.
Artesunate should only be used during pregnancy if your doctor has told you to do so.
Driving or operating machinery should be avoided, as this drug may cause dizziness.
