What is Artemether?

Artemether Oral Suspension is used for the treatment of all kinds of malaria. It is indicated as a first-line treatment for severe and critical malaria. The active ingredient is artemether, which is highly effective against the blood schizonts of both malarial parasites P. falciparum and P. vivax.

Uses
What is Artemether used for?
It is used to treat multidrug-resistant strains of falciparum malaria in both adults and children.
How is Artemether Oral Suspension used?
This medicine is manufactured as a liquid which is intended for oral administration.
What dose should be given?
For uncomplicated and severe falciparum malaria, the usual loading dose is 3.2mg/kg followed by 1.6-2mg/kg for up to one week.
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Artemether.
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- arrhythmia
- elevated levels of SGOT (serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase) or SGPT (serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase)

Precautions
Do NOT use Artemether Oral Suspension if:
- You are hypersensitive to the active substance.
- You are suffering from severe or complicated malaria.

Artemether Oral Suspension should be used with caution in the first trimester of pregnancy since some fetus absorption has been observed. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before taking Artemether.
