What is Amiodarone?

Therapeutic Class:

Active Ingredients: Amiodarone HCl

Amiodarone HCl Tablets are an antianginal and antiarrhythmic drug used to treat or prevent life-threatening irregular heartbeats, including ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. This medicine helps regulate the heartbeat in people with these heart rhythm disorders of the ventricles.

Amiodarone HCl is classified as a class III antiarrhythmic. It works by blocking potassium currents, which causes overactive heart muscles to relax.

Amiodarone 200mg: Why the most common dose?

Amiodarone 200mg is often used as a maintenance dose to effectively manage arrhythmias after an initial higher dose. The usual starting dose is 400mg, but Amiodarone 200mg is commonly prescribed for long-term therapy because it balances effective arrhythmia control with a reduced risk of side effects.
