What is Albendazole?
Active Ingredients: Albendazole
Albendazole Oral Suspension is a drug used to treat various parasite infections, like cystic hydatid disease or neurocysticercosis. It is sometimes used alongside other medications, like corticosteroids, to treat certain conditions. For example, in cases of neurocysticercosis, it is common to use corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and Albendazole to kill the cysticerci (larval cysts). In the case of hydatid disease, it may be used alongside surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence and to treat any remaining parasites.
Albendazole belongs to the drug class called benzimidazole anthelmintics. It exhibits broad-spectrum action against many varieties of worms, such as roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes of domestic animals and humans. The active ingredient works by inhibiting tubulin polymerization. As an effect, the worm's ability to utilize glucose is impaired, which results in immobilization and death.
This medication kills the worms within the body, but eggs can survive a few weeks after treatment. In cases where treatment is repeated, it is often due to the lifecycle of the parasites, where eggs or larvae may survive the initial course of medication. A second course, typically administered a few weeks after the first, ensures that any newly hatched larvae are targeted, effectively breaking the cycle of infestation and clearing the infection.
Albendazole is a prescription medication, and its use should be supervised by a healthcare professional who can determine the appropriate dosage and treatment duration based on the specific infection being treated.

Uses
What is Albendazole used for?
It is used to treat infections caused by roundworms, hookworms, threadworms, whipworms, pinworms, flukes, and other parasites.
How is Albendazole Oral Suspension used?
This medication is manufactured as a liquid to be taken orally. It should be taken by mouth with meals, usually 1 to 2 times daily, or as directed by a doctor. Keep out of the reach of children and store at room temperature between 20-25°C.
What dose should be taken?
For treating neurocysticercosis, the usual dose is as follows:
- adults, less than 60kg: 15mg/kg per day, divided and taken with meals. The maximum dose is 800mg per day.
- adults, 60kg or more: 400mg, taken twice a day with food.
- children, over 1 year old: 15mg/kg per day, divided and taken with meals.
For treating hydatid disease, the usual dose is as follows:
- adults, less than 60kg: 15mg/kg per day, divided and taken with meals. The maximum dose is 800mg per day.
- adults, 60kg or more: 400mg, taken twice a day with food.
- children, over 1 year old: 15mg/kg per day, divided and taken with meals for 4 weeks.
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on the exact dosage. The dosage is based on medical condition, response to the treatment, age, and weight.
Can Albendazole Oral Suspension be taken with other medications?
Albendazole Oral Suspension can interact with other medications. Inform the doctor about all the medications and supplements being taken concurrently. The healthcare provider will assess potential drug interactions and adjust the treatment plan as needed to ensure safety and effectiveness against parasitic infections.
How fast does Albendazole work?
It depends on the infection being treated. In some cases, users may begin feeling the effects within a few days, while for others it may take longer. The drug works by disrupting the metabolism of parasitic worms, which can lead to their death or inhibition of growth.
For how long is it effective?
For certain parasitic infections like neurocysticercosis and hydatid disease, Albendazole is typically prescribed for a specific duration, such as 30 days for neurocysticercosis and a 28-day cycle followed by a 14-day drug-free interval for hydatid disease.
Is Albendazole Oral Suspension effective against all types of parasites?
This drug is effective against a broad range of parasitic worms, including roundworms, hookworms, threadworms, whipworms, pinworms, flukes, and others. Its effectiveness can vary depending on the specific type of parasite and the stage of its lifecycle. It may not be effective against all types, and a combination of antiparasitic drugs may be required.
Can Albendazole Oral Suspension be used as a preventive treatment for parasitic infections?
This drug is mainly used as a treatment for active parasitic infections rather than as a preventive measure. Regular use as a preventive treatment is not recommended due to the potential for side effects and the development of drug resistance in parasites.
Is Albendazole Oral Suspension safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women?
It is not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, as it may harm the unborn baby. Women of childbearing age should use effective birth control while taking this medication. Consult a healthcare provider before starting treatment if the user is pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the drug can pass into breast milk and may harm the nursing infant.
Can Albendazole Oral Suspension be used in the elderly?
While Albendazole Oral Suspension can be used in the elderly, caution is advised. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of the drug, particularly liver and kidney problems. The dosage may need to be adjusted based on the individual's health condition, and close monitoring by a healthcare provider is necessary to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Can Albendazole Oral Suspension be used for animals?
This Albendazole Oral Suspension is primarily formulated for human use. We have another veterinary-specific formulation available for treating parasitic infections in animals.
Can Albendazole Oral Suspension be taken with alcohol?
Alcohol must be avoided while on this medication. Alcohol can increase the risk of liver problems, which can be further exacerbated by Albendazole, as it is metabolized in the liver.
How should Albendazole Oral Suspension be stored?
Albendazole Oral Suspension should be stored at room temperature, between 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F). It should be kept in its original container, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. The medication should be protected from light and moisture, and should not be stored in the bathroom or near a sink. Dispose of any unused or expired medication according to local regulations.

- You have liver disease, biliary Tract problems (such as a blockage), and blood/bone marrow disorders.
- You could be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.
Possible interactions may occur with other pharmaceutical products. It may interact with anticonvulsant medications like phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital, potentially reducing its effectiveness. It may also interact with antiretroviral drugs such as ritonavir, which may increase the levels of Albendazole in the blood, leading to an increased risk of ill effects.
Consult with a doctor or pharmacist about any medications you are taking before starting your treatment.
Grapefruit products should be avoided during treatment because they can interfere with the metabolism of the medication. This interference can lead to increased levels of albendazole in the bloodstream, potentially enhancing the risk of side effects or adverse reactions.

Efficacy and Safety of Albendazole in Hookworm-infected Preschool-aged Children, School-aged Children, and Adults in Côte d’Ivoire: A Phase 2 Randomized, Controlled Dose-finding Trial
Hookworms are serious threat and affect more than half a billion people worldwide. The usual recommended therapy is 400mg of albendazole, and this study discusses higher doses of albendazole.
This is a randomized, controlled dose-finding trial that included 120 preschool aged children (PSAC), 200 school-aged children (SAC), and 200 adults. PSAC were randomized 1:1:1 to 200mg, 400mg, or 600mg of albendazole; the other age groups were randomized 1:1:1:1:1 to placebo or 200mg, 400mg, 600mg, or 800mg. The primary outcome was cure rates (CRs) assessed 14–21 days post-treatment.
The researchers enrolled 38 PSAC, 133 SAC, and 196 adults. The cure rate in adults in the 800-mg arm increased to 74.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 55.6%–87.7%). In SAC, the cure rates ranged from 64.0% in the 200mg arm to 76.0% in the 800mg arm, while the sample size in PSAC was too small for any significant conclusions.
The conclusion of this study is that a single 800mg albendazole dose leads to a better efficacy against hookworm and is well tolerated.
