What is a Breathing Circuit?
A Breathing Circuit is a medical device used for delivering oxygen and other gases to a patient while removing exhaled gases like carbon dioxide. The circuit is a system of components that direct the flow of gases between the patient and the support system. It is used during mechanical ventilation or anesthesia.
Disposable breathing circuits are sometimes called respiratory circuits or breathing systems. The system consists of several components, including a disposable circuit, heat & moisture exchange filter (HMEF), catheter mount, reservoir bag, and a 2-way connector.
There are different types of breathing circuits produced, including corrugated circuits, expandable circuits, and smoothbore circuits. The catheter mount, which allows for the connection to the respiratory device, is available as corrugate, expandable, or smoothbore catheter mounts.
The circuit length ensures optimal delivery of gases and a proper fit for the patient. For either adult breathing circuits or pediatric breathing circuits, there are lengths of 1.5m, 1.8m, or 2m available.
The reservoir bag acts as a temporary storage for oxygen or other gases and is available in different capacities, including 0.5L, 1L, 2L, and 3L.

Components
Corrugated
Corrugated breathing circuit is designed to provide optimal performance and ease of use. Its lightweight and flexible construction reduces the risk of kinking which help to ensure a smooth flow of gases during respiratory procedures.
The corrugated breathing circuit allows for easy maneuverability and positioning, enhancing patient comfort and safety, while also giving efficient delivery of oxygen and anesthetic gases.
Expandable
Expandable breathing circuit offers versatility and convenience in respiratory procedures. Its lightweight and flexible design allows for easy positioning and placement of equipment, providing flexibility in the location of devices away from the patient's head.
The expandable tube provides ample length to accommodate various setup configurations for breathing systems, making it suitable for a range of clinical settings.
Smoothbore
Smoothbore breathing circuit is designed with a "tube-within-a-tube" configuration, which eliminates twisting between the inspiratory and expiratory limbs of the circuit. This unique spiral body design ensures proper alignment and prevents potential obstructions in the flow of gas. The inner wall of the tube is smooth, which reduces resistance to ventilation, and the smooth surface facilitates the collection of condensed water on the body of the tube, preventing water buildup and potential interference with gas delivery.
Corrugated
Corrugated catheter mount provides a connection between the patient interface and the anesthesia machine. With a length of 20cm, it offers flexibility and maneuverability, allowing for comfortable positioning. The corrugated design allows for easy expansion and contraction, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted gas flow.
The corrugated catheter mount is sterile and designed for single-use, reducing the risk of contamination and ensuring patient safety.
Expandable
Expandable catheter mount is a versatile and convenient option for respiratory support during medical procedures. With its extendible and shape-memorizing design, it can adapt to different patient anatomies and maintain a secure fit. The 20cm length offers flexibility while providing ample reach and maneuverability.
The expandable catheter mount is designed for single-use and the sterile nature ensures patient safety and minimizes the risk of cross-contamination.
Smoothbore
Smoothbore catheter mount is designed with a smooth inner wall, which reduces resistance to airflow and promotes efficient ventilation. It features anti-kinking reinforcement to prevent accidental bending or obstruction. With a length of 20cm, it offers flexibility while providing sufficient reach for respiratory support.
The smoothbore catheter mount is sterile and intended for single use, which helps ensure patient safety and minimizes the risk of contamination.
Disposable Circuit
Disposable Circuit is flexible tubing that connects the reservoir bag to other parts of the circuit, including the patient interface and anesthesia machine. It is typically constructed from a durable, latex-free material like PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which ensures reliability and compatibility with many types of medical equipment. Being disposable, it offers the advantage of single-use, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination and facilitating convenient setup and disposal.
Heat & Moisture Exchange Filter (HMEF)
Heat & Moisture Exchange Filter (HMEF) is designed to conserve a patient's heat and moisture during mechanical ventilation, reducing the risk of complications.
The HMEF also has a bacterial/viral filter to prevent the spread of infection during mechanical ventilation. These filters are usually made of hydrophobic materials that allow air to pass through while capturing microorganisms and preventing their release into the environment.
Catheter Mount
Catheter Mount is designed to connect an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube to the rest of the anesthesia circuit. It provides flexibility and mobility to the patient's airway, allowing the moving of the head and neck without interrupting the anesthesia circuit. It also helps prevent dislodgement of the endotracheal or tracheostomy tube during transport or movement of the patient.
Reservoir Bag
Reservoir Bag is used to supply oxygen and anesthetic gases to the patient. The bag is usually made of a collapsible, flexible material, such as latex or silicone, and is connected to the anesthesia machine or breathing circuit.
The reservoir bag comes in different sizes, ranging from 0.5L to 3L, to accommodate a wide range of patient sizes and types of procedures.
2-Way Connector
2-Way Connector allows the anesthesiologist to manually control the flow of gases in the circuit. The valve typically has two ports, one for inflow and one for outflow, and is used to control the direction of gas flow within the circuit. This allows for efficient management of respiratory gases during procedures.

Uses
What is a Breathing Circuit used for?
It is used to deliver oxygen and other gases and remove carbon dioxide during mechanical ventilation or anesthesia.
How is a Breathing Circuit used?
The breathing circuit should be securely connected to the patient's endotracheal tube or tracheostomy tube.
Are there any storage instructions for Breathing Circuits?
Before use, breathing circuits should be stored in a clean and dry area, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. It is important to prevent contamination and damage to the circuit, so it is recommended to keep them in their original packaging or in a suitable storage container.
How should Breathing Circuits be discarded after use?
After use, breathing circuits should be disposed of in accordance with local regulations for medical waste disposal. Disposable breathing circuits are usually discarded as medical waste.
FAQs
What are the different types of Breathing Circuits available?
There are three types of circuits available corrugated circuits, example circuits, and smoothbore circuits. Corrugated circuits are commonly used for general ventilation. They provide flexibility, durability, and resistance to kinking. An expandable breathing circuit is similar to a corrugated one but has the additional feature of expandability. The tube can elongate or stretch to accommodate the patient's movements or positional changes during procedures or transportation. Smoothbore circuits are typically preferred in situations where lower dead space or resistance is crucial, such as for pediatric ventilation or when precise control of gas delivery is required.
Can Breathing Circuits be used for both adult and pediatric patients?
Breathing circuits are available in various sizes and configurations in order to accommodate either adults or children.
Are there any safety considerations when using a Breathing Circuit?
The proper assembly, maintenance, and monitoring of a breathing circuit are essential for the safety of the patient. It is important to follow the guidelines provided with the system and monitor for any signs of malfunction or disconnection during use.
Can I get regulatory assistance for importing your Breathing Circuit?
Absolutely! We offer comprehensive regulatory support to our distributors, ensuring smooth compliance with local regulations for importing our medical devices.
