What is Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine?
Active Ingredients: Sulfadoxine, Pyrimethamine
Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine Tablets are a fixed-dose combination medicine used for the prevention and treatment of malaria in adults and children. The combination of Sulfadoxine Pyrimethamine works together to inhibit the production of enzymes involved in the synthesis of folic acid within the parasites.
Sulfadoxine is in the drug family called sulfonamide, commonly known as a sulfa medicine. Pyrimethamine is antiprotozoal. Each drug by itself is only moderately effective in treating malaria because the parasite Plasmodium falciparum may be able to use exogenous folic acid. However, in combination, the two substances have a synergistic effect that disrupts that ability.
