What is Chloroquine Phosphate?

Chloroquine Phosphate Oral Suspension is a drug used for the prevention and treatment of malaria. It is an antimalarial agent used for uncomplicated infections caused by P. falciparum, P.ovale, chloroquine-susceptible P.vivax, or Plasmodium malariae. The active ingredient, Chloroquine, is a 4-aminoquinoline.

Uses
What is Chloroquine Phosphate used for?
It is used to prevent and treat malaria caused by P. vivax, P. malariae, and most strains of P. falciparum.
How is Chloroquine Phosphate Oral Suspension used?
This medication is manufactured as a liquid to be taken orally. It should be taken by mouth with or without food as directed by a doctor.
What dose should be taken?
For the prevention of malaria, Chloroquine Phosphate is given once weekly and should be administered on the same day each week. The usual dose for adults is 500mg per dose. For children under 18, the usual dose is 8.3mg/kg. The maximum dose is 500mg. Treatment should begin two weeks before traveling to the region, and it should continue for eight weeks following leaving the area.
For the treatment of malaria, the usual dose for adults is 1000mg for the first dose. After the first dose, 500mg should be given every 6-8 hours. For days 3 and 4, only one dose of 500mg should be given. For children and adults with low body weight, the usual dose is 10mg/kg. After the first dose, 5mg/kg should be given 6, 24, and 36 hours later.
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Chloroquine Phosphate.
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- bleeding gums
- black or tarry stools
- blurred vision
- blood in the urine or stools
- chest pain
- diarrhea
- difficulty with swallowing
- dizziness
- fast heartbeat
- fever
- skin rash
- hives
- itching
- sweating
- tightness in the chest

Precautions
Do NOT use Chloroquine Phosphate if:
- You are allergic to any ingredient of the oral suspension.
- You have vision problems or retinal changes.
- You are taking arsenic, astemizole, terfenadine, cimetidine, cisapride, quinacrine, or dofetilide.
Possible interactions with this medicine may occur if:
- You are taking Cimetidine or quinacrine (increasing the chloroquine side effects);
- You are taking ampicillin, rabies vaccine, or thyroid hormones (decreasing the effectiveness of these medicines);
- You are taking cyclosporine (because its side effects may be increased).
Consult with a doctor about any medications you are taking before your treatment with Chloroquine Phosphate Oral Suspension.
The use of Chloroquine Phosphate during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be avoided. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional before having Chloroquine Phosphate.
Driving or operating machinery should be avoided, as this drug may cause dizziness.
